Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is an independent national government body that regulates privacy and freedom of information. It is headed by the Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner (Commissioner) and is set up under the Australian Information Commissioner Act 2010 (AIC Act). The OAIC has the following primary functions:
- To ensure that government agencies and organisations comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and other laws when handling personal information.
- To protect the public's right of access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth).
- To implement information management functions within the government under the AIC Act.
