Introduction

PLC Arbitration (forming part of PLC Dispute Resolution) is an innovative web-based legal information service that provides up-to-date and practical guidance on English and international arbitration. The arbitration materials address all aspects of arbitration, from drafting the agreement to enforcing awards. The service covers practice and procedure and those matters which are of concern to all those involved in arbitration, regardless of their specialist area.
The service is designed and written by Practical Law Company's professional support team of arbitration specialists recruited from private practice and the bar, who have extensive experience of all forms of dispute resolution. The content is supplemented by materials written by expert solicitors and barristers, which are then kept up-to-date by our team. The important benefits of the service include saving fee earners' time, raising the quality of their work and, where a firm has PSLs, freeing them up to focus on client or firm specific tasks, rather than generic current awareness and maintenance of basic know-how materials (see Advantages).

Components of service

PLC Arbitration comprises:
  • Weekly and monthly practical legal updates delivered to subscribers by e-mail and published on the web. The updates include coverage of international arbitration topics, including analysis of investment treaty arbitration awards, as well as jurisdiction-specific current awareness covering key arbitral jurisdictions.
  • A bank of practice notes containing succinct explanations of arbitration law and procedure, continually updated to reflect changes in law or practice.
  • Arbitration case studies with drafting notes, providing worked examples of applications or procedures, maintained to keep up to date with relevant developments.
  • Clause drafting resources, including multi-jurisdictional clause drafting guidance and templates.
  • Articles from PLC Magazine and Cross-border Quarterly that are of particular interest to arbitration specialists.
  • International arbitration events calendar, containing details of worldwide seminars, conferences.
  • Cross-border country Q & As on arbitration and dispute resolution in numerous jurisdictions.

Updates

The updates cover:
  • Significant new cases and awards.
  • Changes in arbitral practice and procedure.
  • News from arbitral institutions and key jurisdictions.
They are written by the professional support team together with expert contributors in key jurisdictions. We monitor and review all relevant sources daily to identify developments which are of practical significance to the practitioner. Unlike some other services, PLC Arbitration does not simply pass on raw information. Our updates tell the practitioner about the practical implications of that decision or development. We pass on only those developments which are of practical significance to the busy practitioner involved in dispute resolution.
Our updates include:
  • A summary.
  • Relevant background information.
  • An analysis of the practical impact of developments.
Each update will be complete in itself, but will also include hypertext links to source materials (including transcripts for new cases), other updates and practice notes where appropriate.
You will be able to choose to receive updates by either weekly or monthly e-mail. The most recent items will also feature on the PLC Arbitration homepage. Past updates will be accessible from a fully searchable archive.
The updates can be integrated with subscribers' internal briefings and marketing materials.

Practice notes

Practice notes are concise, practical explanations of the law and practice of a particular topic. For experienced lawyers, they provide up-to-date and reliable statements of law and practice. Junior lawyers will use them to gain an understanding of relevant areas not yet acquired through practice. The notes may also be used as the basis for in-house training sessions.
Practice notes are kept up-to-date by our specialist and experienced professional support team whenever the relevant law and practice changes.

Case studies, letters and example court applications

The service includes case studies and (in relation to English arbitration law) example court applications. They are kept up-to-date by our professional support team as the relevant law and practice change.
The documents are supplemented by drafting notes. These give detailed guidance on the relevant legal, drafting and procedural issues, assisting you to adapt the example to your or your client's specific requirements.
The case studies and example court documents provide an easily searchable bank of information to save the busy practitioner time.
Practical Law Company has developed an application allowing certain documents to be downloaded in a firm's style, saving substantial time for fee-earners and secretaries. For more information, see PLC Firmstyle.

Checklists

The service also gives access to a number of user-friendly checklists. These act as an aide memoir to ensure important points of practice and procedure are followed and can easily be converted into training materials.

PLC Magazine articles

The service provides access to arbitration related content in any issue of PLC Magazine since its launch in 1990. Feature articles can be read on screen in simple text or PDF format, complete with graphics.

International focus

As well as detailed coverage of UK arbitration law, PLC Arbitration covers all key international arbitration topics and jurisdictions. For practitioners specialising in international arbitration, we provide a dedicated International Arbitration page, accessible from the link at the top right hand corner of the UK PLC Arbitration homepage.
Subscribers can use the dedicated International Arbitration page to browse topics, resources and jurisdictions. The International Arbitration page thus provides an alternative means of accessing and using the PLC international arbitration materials, all of which are available either via the PLC Arbitration homepage, or via the dedicated International Arbitration page.

Easy to use

The service is delivered through a web site using advanced technology specifically developed by Practical Law Company to provide a seamless source of managed know-how to the practitioner in an easy-to-access form. Its features include:
  • Searching. All text is fully searchable. Searches can be refined by type of material (for example, standard documents only) or within a specified time period.
  • Index. Alternatively, you will be able to browse topic areas and access information via the PLC Dispute Resolution homepage or the PLC topic index.
  • Links. Frequent hypertext links will take you seamlessly to additional information in other Practical Law Company materials and external sources, if required.
  • Integration. You can integrate your own know-how materials closely with those of the service while maintaining confidentiality. For further information, please contact your account manager, or call the PLC helpline.

Professional support team

The Practical Law Company professional support team comprises over 90 experienced former practitioners covering a wide range of law. To view their profiles, see PLC professional support team.

Consultation board

The service has a consultation board of leading arbitration experts. They advise on the direction of the service and are used as a sounding board on points of law and practice.

"As a leading litigation practice, we need to be sure we are giving our clients the focused, high quality advice they expect. PLC Dispute Resolution complements our PSL function perfectly by providing our lawyers with reliable, high calibre know-how, freeing up their time to focus on our clients' specific requirements."
Patricia Orr, Senior Professional Support Lawyer, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP
"Informative, reliable and practical: PLC Dispute Resolution is developing into an excellent service. The weekly e-mail update and the responsiveness to recent developments is very impressive and the team are rapidly building a comprehensive collection of materials."
Gareth Kagan, Head of Commercial Litigation and Regulation, Bond Pearce LLP
"Before PLC Dispute Resolution I struggled to keep my litigation precedents up to date. PLC Dispute Resolution means I can abandon that task - and have access to a full and complete range of precedents and explanatory notes. In a medium sized firm without PSL, this service is priceless."
Mark Tudor, Partner - Commercial Litigation Team, Matthew Arnold & Baldwin
"A subscription to PLC Dispute Resolution means that I can ensure that our group's PSLs are adding value in a more cost-effective manner. We no longer produce routine know-how internally and we rely upon the well-researched and well-written weekly email update to keep us abreast of all major developments. The main strength of PLC's offering for me is the fact that I have met and can access the editorial team. When I provide feedback or request a particular resource, I know my request will be taken seriously and acted upon. It is a two-way relationship, not a faceless database."
Catherine Milton, Head of Litigation and Regulatory Knowledge Management, DLA Piper UK LLP
