The Local Government Pension Scheme is one of the largest public-sector pension schemes with over 4.6 million members. It provides defined benefits and, although a national scheme, is administered locally for participating employers through 99 regional pension funds known as administering authorities. The LGPS is available for all local government employees in England and Wales, including those who are no longer employed by a local authority but are entitled to join the scheme under an admission agreement.
