Infrastructure for hosted applications

PLC's online services are hosted on a technology infrastructure that provides high levels of availability, redundancy and security.

All of PLC's online services are available as hosted applications. Subscribers can complete research and manage their transactions and projects using a standard Web browser without having to worry about complex technologies, security profiles, backup and restore strategies or business continuity.

Managed services

All of PLC's online services, including PLC Diligence and PLC FastDraft are hosted on systems managed by NTT Europe Online, a subsidiary of NTT Group, the world's largest telecommunications company. The co-location facility in London is manned 24 hours a day and all systems are monitored 24x7x365 by a team of dedicated support technicians.

Database

All data is stored in a secure Oracle database. The database is configured as a Real Application Cluster (Oracle RAC) to maximise throughput and minimise downtime. The database servers are proactively managed by experienced administrators.

Internet bandwidth

All services are hosted on systems that are connected to the Internet through the NTT Communications Global IP Network. This network, one of the largest in the world, allows customers to experience minimal hops, packet loss and delays. The backbone services are available free of network outages 100% of the time with latencies of 35 milliseconds or less for the Intra Europe Network and 90 milliseconds or less for the Trans-Atlantic Network.

Security

Network security includes firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam and intrusion prevention systems.

Where appropriate, communication between the subscribers Web browser and the applications takes place using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. This communication uses SSL certificates from Verisign and 128-bit encryption.

All systems are configured using best practice guidelines for operating system and database security. NTT Europe Online is certified ISO17799 for Information Security Management.

Data backup and restore

All data is stored on NetApp fabric-attached storage systems which have a proven ability to continuously serve data at greater than 99.99% availability. All data is copied to tape on a daily incremental and full weekly schedule. Tapes are retained for a 90 day period to provide point-in-time recovery.

Business continuity

Full business continuity facilities are available at a geographically separate disaster recovery site in Europe. Data is replicated from the primary site to the disaster recovery site in real time to ensure minimal data loss. The disaster recovery site is capable of handling all subscriber requests in the event of a primary site failure.
