Government publishes final report on data-handling procedures | Practical Law

The government has published the final report by the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, on the government's data-handling procedures. The government commissioned the report following the Chancellor of the Exchequer's announcement in November 2007 of a serious security breach by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The report notes that a significant number of improvements in data processing and management have already been made across all government departments. However, further measures are required and are outlined in the report. The publication of the report coincides with three related independent reviews of recent government data-security breaches and, significantly, a statement by the Information Commissioner that he intends to issue enforcement notices against HMRC and the Ministry of Defence.
