Introduction

Employment law is constantly changing. PLC Employment offers a specialist online service which:

  • Keeps employment lawyers abreast of the developments in their area, and the practical implications of the changes, without deluging them with information about irrelevant cases.
  • Provides access to a bank of practice notes, standard documents and drafting notes that are constantly updated to reflect the latest changes in law and practice.

The service is designed and run by PLC Employment's team of employment specialists, who have extensive experience of all areas of employment law in practice. They are supported by a consultation board, consisting of a prestigious range of academic and professional experts.

PLC Employment gives employment lawyers a level of support that was previously available only to those firms with dedicated professional support lawyers. The service is also valuable to firms with PSLs, by allowing them to concentrate their internal resources where the greatest return lies.

Updates

The service includes practical updates on any relevant developments. The updates are available on the PLC Employment homepage as they are written and are also sent to you weekly (or, if you choose, monthly) by e-mail. The updates include:

  • Significant new cases (both UK and ECJ).
  • Opinions of the Advocate General.
  • Proposed, draft and new UK and EC legislation.
  • Consultation papers from the EC, UK government and other relevant bodies.
  • Guidance and Codes of Practice issued by the EC, UK government and other relevant bodies.

The most recent items appear on the PLC Employment homepage and the archive of past updates is fully searchable (see Employment updates). There is also an archive of the weekly (and monthly) e-mails (PLC Employment email archive (www.practicallaw.com/0-200-4510)) which means that there is no need for subscribers to retain the updates that are sent to them.

PLC Employment's professional support team monitor all the relevant sources, review any developments for relevance and report on those which raise points that are of significance to practitioners. Where necessary, we purchase copies of decisions from the tribunal or Employment Appeals Tribunal. For an example of a weekly e-mail (and its underlying materials) see PLC Employment weekly e-mail for week ending 26 March 2010 (www.practicallaw.com/7-501-8478).

Our editorial policy is to cover only those developments that are of practical relevance to employment lawyers. This is assessed by our employment professional support team. Our purpose is to shield practitioners from the avalanche of employment law information, relieving them of some of the burden of keeping up to date with current developments.

PLC updates will explain the background where necessary and provide a legal and practical commentary, always bearing in mind the needs of the busy practitioner. Where appropriate, they will include links to external source materials (including transcripts for new cases) and other materials within PLC Employment.

The updates can be used by subscribers for internal training purposes. They can act as a basis for further discussion and can be integrated with subscribers' internal training and briefing materials.

Practice notes

PLC Employment includes practice notes containing succinct explanations of employment law and practice in the relevant area, which focus on the practical application of the law to particular situations or transactions. The list of practice notes currently available is on the PLC Employment homepage and includes, for example:

Our specialist and experienced professional support team continually update all of the practice notes as relevant developments occur.

Standard documents and drafting notes

The service includes a library of standard documents, standard clauses and drafting notes that are available online. The PLC Employment homepage gives access to a list of the standard documents and drafting notes currently available, including, for example:

All of the standard documents and clauses have drafting notes, which give detailed guidance on the relevant legal, negotiating and drafting issues.

PLC Employment's employment specialists continually update the standard documents whenever relevant new legislation comes into force or case law developments occur, in the same way as practice notes. This is a significant feature which sets PLC Employment apart from traditional sources of standard documents, and gives our users a key advantage.

Checklists, flowcharts and tables

The service also gives access to a number of user-friendly checklists, flow charts and other resources to help the practitioner. The full list of the checklists currently available is on the PLC Employment homepage and includes, for example:

PLC Magazine articles

A subscription to PLC Employment gives access to relevant articles that are published in PLC Magazine and other Practical Law Company publications. These publications (in particular PLC Magazine) have included practical articles on important areas of employment law and in depth coverage of employment law developments over a number of years. PLC Employment includes free access to selected articles and to the monthly employment know-how bulletins from PLC magazine. All of these are available through the know-how index or the search facility.
